Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; Language Acquisition; Psycholinguistics
Call Deadline: 31-Aug-2014
Meeting Description:
Language acquisition research on topics ranging from phonological processing to semantic knowledge has been built on meticulous examination of small data sets, such as case studies. While we have learned a lot from such careful work, some limitations quickly became evident. A new horizon has opened as bigger, open data sets began to emerge. Early examples are the CHILDES and the MCDI projects. Today, new technologies pave the way to some much needed cross-linguistic extensions, for instance, via automatic annotation of day-long audio(-video) recordings in seldom described languages. It also becomes possible to include other linguistic levels (e.g., receptive knowledge through open repositories of experimental results).
The present workshop will provide a platform for language acquisition researchers to assess the progress towards high quality, big, and open data sets, and to discuss solutions for current challenges. Researchers who have collected large linguistic data sets from infants and children will share current insights and perspectives. In addition to presenting results from their own research, they will discuss challenges (such as data standardization, anonymization, barriers to data sharing), and consider how to facilitate cross-linguistic extensions. Specialists in neighboring disciplines can gain some methodological and theoretical insights potentially useful to their own work by learning about the state-of-the-art in large-scale approaches to language acquisition.
Invited Speaker:
Professor Katherine Demuth (Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia)
Note:
This workshop is a so-called 'Kurz-AG' of the annual meeting of the German Society of Linguistics (DGfS; Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Sprachwissenschaften). This means it takes place within a three-day conference for which all participants have to register. The short nature of this workshop allows presenters and participants to attend other workshops on the remaining two conference days.
Organizing Committee:
Christina Bergmann (Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique, DEC-ENS, Paris, France)
Alejandrina Cristia (Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique, DEC-ENS, CNRS, Paris, France)
Sho Tsuji (RIKEN Brain Science Institute, Japan)
Final Call for Papers:
Extended deadline: August 31, 2014
Please submit an abstract of about 400 words (plain text, no figures or tables) via this form: https://sites.google.com/site/chbergma/bigdata/submissions
A total of 6 proposals for 20-minute talks (plus 10 minutes discussion) will be accepted.
Important Dates:
Submission deadline: August 31, 2014
Notification of submission outcome: September 2014
