Description:

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the following vacancy in
its Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities, Arts and Education:
Doctoral candidate in the field of Linguistics / Language Education (M/F)
- Ref. F3C-DEC-COM-080000
- Full-time (40 hrs per week)
- Fixed term contract 3 years, renewable 1 year

The University of Luxembourg offers a job position as doctoral candidate, with
the opportunity to apply for a PhD research grant in Luxembourg from October,
1st 2014. The grant is directly tied to the candidate. The candidate will be
funded by the university to write a research grant in consultation with Dr.
Constanze Weth, and thus apply for a grant personally. In case of an accepted
application, the position will become financed by the Luxemburgish AFR (Aide
Formation Recherche) fellowship (further information and guidelines on
http://www.afr.lu/en/ PhD-and-Postdoc-Grants) or other grant financing. 

Your Role :
The doctoral candidate will be a member of the Institute for Research on
Multilingualism within the ECCS research unit (Research Unit on Education,
Culture, Cognition and Society), Faculty of Language and Literature, Humanities,
Arts and Education at the University of Luxembourg. 

The doctoral candidate will work in a research project that investigates the
processes of spelling acquisition in the multilingual setting of Luxembourg
where children learn Luxemburgish in preschool, are alphabetized in German and
start learning French from second grade on. Learning to spell requires
reanalyzing the familiar spoken language in order to apprehend the structure of
written language. Beyond the phonological information in alphabetic writing
systems, German and French orthographies include morphological and syntactical
information. While those have been well researched for the acquisition of each
writing system, research is needed to understand the learning processes of
biliterate children. The aim of the doctoral project is to investigate how
multilingual, multiliterate learners make use of orthographic morphological
information in the acquisition of German and French writing systems. 

Activities:
- Complete a doctoral thesis.
- Conduct qualitative or quantitative based research in primary schools.
- Present on international conferences and publish in international journals.
- Contribute to teaching in language education.

Profile:
- Good knowledge and interest in Linguistics
- Readiness to approach theories, models and current international research in
the area of written language and writing acquisition
- Good knowledge of German and French in order to conduct analyses of the
writing acquisition in Luxemburg
- Have an outstanding master's degree or a diploma in linguistics/language education
- Be experienced in data collection and analysis (qualitative or quantitative)
- Have a sound knowledge of specific software (Office programs, etc.).
The candidate has to integrate into a multilingual University. She/he should
therefore have good command of English.
