Crisis, Conflict and Resolution: Translation and Interpreting in History
Monash University, Caulfield campus, Melbourne, 23-26 June 2015

An international conference including a one-day symposium on ‘Interpreter training through the ages and into the future’, on 23 June 2015.

Although interpreting is as old as human contact, its history has until recently remained marginalised. In the aftermath of mid-20th century warfare, international war crimes trials created new venues and demand for interpreting that have recently brought attention to the political and politicised nature of the role of translators and interpreters. However, the presence of translators and interpreters at crucial moments in history is an area that demands further exploration: the work of these cross-cultural communicators may create or resolve crisis and conflict; translators and interpreters are often also created by conflict, in the sense that individuals dislocated by colonisation, war, disasters or forced migration become those able to interpret and translate. Furthermore, the training and professionalization of these mediators, emerging from an increasing recognition of the complexity of their role in such contexts, also calls attention to the historical emergence of translation and interpreting as an academic field of study.

Call for Papers:

This conference invites research papers from a variety of disciplines dealing with this topic, welcoming especially papers with an Asia-Pacific focus. Possible areas of research include and are not limited to:

- Translators and interpreters in zones of occupation and warfare
- Translators and interpreters in the justice system 
- Translators and interpreters as collaborators /mediators / ‘fixers’
- Colonisation and interpretation
- Interpreters in the ‘Age of Discovery’
- Interpreters and diplomacy
- Training of interpreters through history 
- Ethics and training for interpreters in conflict zones or in the humanitarian sector 

We accept submission for panel proposals and individual papers.

Paper proposal submissions close 1 November 2014. 
Participants will be informed of the outcome by 1 December 2014.
