Journal of CercleS (European Confederation of Language Centres in Higher
Education)

Special issue: Teaching Medical Discourse in Higher Education

In the last few years foreign languages, especially English, have increasingly
been taught in medical schools around the world as an integral part of the
university preparation of future medical staff and healthcare practitioners.
Submissions are invited for a special issue of Language Learning in Higher
Education that will investigate this phenomenon by focusing on the teaching of
medical discourse in higher education. Contributions should reflect examples
of innovation and good practice that address one of the following themes:
− Curriculum design
− Materials development
− Teaching approach 
− Assessment
− Medical and healthcare terminology 
− Medical discourse 
− Communication in medicine and healthcare 
− Cultural aspects related to the language of medicine 
− Ethics of medical communication 
− Pragmatic aspects of the language of medicine 
− The translation of medical texts

Deadlines to remember:
Submission of articles: 31 August 2015
Review process: September-November 2015
Notification of acceptance: December 2015
Revision of articles: January-March 2016 
Publication of the special issue: Autumn 2016

Submissions should be sent as e-mail attachments to:

Articles should be written in one of the three working languages of CercleS
(English, French and German) and should be between 6,500 and 8,000 words in
length, including References but excluding tables, figures and appendices.
They should be presented as follows: 
1. Name of author(s) 
2. Title of article 
3. Abstract (200-250 words) 
4. Key words (between 5 and 7) 
5. Name of author(s) followed by institutional affiliation(s)/address(es) for
correspondence and e-mail address 
6. Text of article 
7. Notes (if any) 
8. References 
9. Appendices (if any)
10. Two or three sentences of self-description for each author

When preparing your article for submission, please observe the following
conventions:
− Margins: 2.5 cm
− Font: Times New Roman 12pt 
− Paragraph spacing: 1.5 lines 
− No space after paragraphs 
− Except for the first paragraph in a section, indent the first line of each
paragraph by pressing the tab key once 
− Tables and figures should be inserted in sequence at the end of your text
file. Indicate roughly where each table figure should occur by inserting in
your text: [Please insert Table/Figure X about! here] 
− Notes should be used sparingly and should be inserted manually as endnotes
(in other words, insert the number of each note at the appropriate point in
your running text and type your notes in numbered sequence immediately after
the text of your article and before the list of references) 
− Figures, screenshots, etc. should be submitted as high-resolution images 
− References, both in the running text and in the list at the end of the
article, should be presented strictly according to the publisher's style
sheet.

Submissions that fail to observe these conventions will not be considered for
publication.
