Description:

Postdoctoral Research opportunities at the University of Melbourne

Two exciting postdoc opportunities at the University of Melbourne, associated
with the newly created ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language
(COEDL, http://www.dynamicsoflanguage.edu.au/) have just been advertised: one
to conduct work on Australian indigenous languages, and a second to work on
corpus development for less-described languages.

Classification: Postdoctoral Fellow
Salary: AUD $79,609 - $85,452 p.a.
Superannuation: Employer contribution of 17%
Employment Type: Full time (fixed term) position available from 1 March 2015
until 28 February 2018
Fixed term contract type: Research
Other benefits: www.hr.unimelb.edu.au/careers/info/benefits

(1) Australian languages postdoc

A postdoc working on the multigenerational documentation of a strong
Australian language (such as Murrinhpatha, Arrernte, Yolngu or others). The
purpose is to push language description and documentation beyond the standard
monovarietal grammar, and document language across the lifespan, with the
potential to link in with other Centre research on language learning, language
variation, and their relationships to language evolution. Proposals will be
ranked by the case they make for the relative importance of this as a vital
next step in our understanding of Australian languages, the innovative and/or
interesting approach to the issue that they propose to take in their own
research, the potential benefit to the community they propose to work with,
the extent to which they draw on a team of researchers working within the same
language, as well as the feasibility of the project within the time frame and
resources

(2) Corpus development postdoc

- An established relationship with the relevant indigenous community to be
worked with
- Have identified legacy collections, perhaps related to the above language,
that will be made accessible
- Be able to develop corpora of several languages
- Ability to contribute to developing methodology and software for building
new corpora
- Develop corpora in the EOPAS format for eligible languages in the CoEDL
- A clear and innovative plan addressing what the applicant sees as an
exciting topic that addresses the development of re-usable corpora for
languages of the region (Australia/Pacific).
