Meeting Description:

The international conference 'Names and Naming in the Postcolonial English-speaking World' will be held on June 26-27, 2014, at the University of Calabria, Italy. The conference aims at mapping the ongoing critical debate on postcolonial names and naming practices in English. Besides questioning the hegemonic constructions and power relations embedded in names, it seeks to readdress the theoretical and methodological debate on the study of names and naming in postcolonial contexts from an interdisciplinary perspective that opens up to a wide range of fields in the Humanities.

The conference fee (€ 100) includes: registration and attendance to all sessions, conference pack, buffet lunches and coffee breaks, transfer from the airport of Lamezia Terme to Rende on the evening of June 25, welcome reception. 

Call for Papers:

The international conference 'Names and Naming in the Postcolonial English-speaking World' aims at mapping the ongoing critical debate on postcolonial names and naming practices in English. Taking the intersection between linguistics and postcolonial studies as its starting point, the conference seeks to explore new interdisciplinary directions and investigates how names and naming have shaped and informed the linguistic and cultural representations of (post)colonial identities, both nationally and individually. Building on the assumptions that naming is a performative act and that colonial space is always chartered through names, the conference invites submissions discussing, both diachronically and synchronically, the notion and functions of names and naming in the postcolonial English-speaking world. 

Considering the naming process as an act of postcolonial abrogation and appropriation, papers should question the hegemonic constructions and power relations embedded in names and readdress the theoretical and methodological debate on the study of names and naming in postcolonial contexts. Being interdisciplinary, the conference welcomes scholars from a wide range of research fields in the humanities and opens up to a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives including, but not being limited to, onomastics, critical toponymy, the linguistic landscape approach, the linguistics of names, and the philosophy of names. 

Topics may include:

- Colonial and postcolonial anthroponyms, toponyms, technonyms, and fictional names
- Postcolonial names and the ethnicity/gender/class paradigm
- Naming as colonial strategy of control;
- Naming and the imperial centre-periphery dichotomy
- Postcolonial abrogation and appropriation of colonial names
- Postcolonial linguistic landscapes
- Phonology and morphology of colonial and postcolonial names
- Language contact and naming
- Naming and World Englishes
- Postcolonial names and globalization
- Naming and multilingualism

Abstracts of no more than 300 words and a short bio-bibliographical note should be sent to postcolonialnames at gmail.com by 1 April 2014. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 20 April 2014.
