Description:
California College of the Arts is seeking candidates for a ranked non-tenure* associate or assistant professor position to teach courses in writing and communications skills to English Language Learners. With a growing international ELL student population, the program and college are searching for faculty interested in teaching remedial courses, evolving and designing curricula, providing academic coaching at a variety of levels, and increasing our institutional capacity to support ELLs in both the academic and studio learning environments.
Teaching load is a maximum of four courses/year at the UG and, possibly, graduate levels.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to collaborate on improving remedial ELL curriculum and prepared to provide occasional faculty trainings in ELL pedagogical methods for instructors across the college.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to participate in the ongoing development of the college’s summer English-language intensive program with the possibility of teaching in the program (additionally compensated).
In keeping with the college’s commitment to diversity, community engagement, and social justice, we seek candidates who cultivate an equitable, diverse scholarly environment and curriculum. We value collaboration, intellectual flexibility and creative approaches to scholarship and to teaching.
*Ranked non-tenure faculty appointments carry 3- year renewable terms, full benefits (including health benefits as well as eligibility for grants), and a teaching load of 50-80% full time. Ranked non-tenure faculty are voting faculty members and expected to fulfill academic service requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will
- Possess a Master’s degree in TESOL or equivalent from an accredited institution;
- Have experience and interest in training peer instructors across the college in best practices around ELL learning in a higher education setting;
- Have a current, successful, and sustained record of teaching ELL students in a higher education setting;
- Demonstrate a background in teaching composition to ELL students at an undergraduate or graduate level;
- Have experience developing ELL curriculum and a willingness to play a central role in developing such curriculum in the future;
- Demonstrate a significant interest in art and design making practices as well as more traditional liberal arts academic disciplines and skills;
- Have an ability to collaborate on an instructional team and faculty committees;
- Have an interest in collaborating with other members of the college community to foster a successful learning environment for ELL students.
Also desirable qualifications:
- Experience with computer-assisted and/or on-line ELL instruction;
- Awareness of current assessment of student learning practices;
