Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science

Call Deadline: 01-Apr-2014

Meeting Description:

The conference aims to serve as a forum for discussion of any topic within the field of cognitive linguistics. In addition, in line with its title “Applied Cognitive Linguistics: New challenges”, particular attention will be paid to research into the application of the theoretical postulates of cognitive linguistics to other fields such as first (L1) and second (L2) language acquisition, translation or discourse analysis.

The conference will feature four plenary lectures, delivered by scholars of international repute:

Frank Boers (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand)
Alejandro Castañeda (University of Granada, Spain)
Nick Ellis (University of Michigan, USA)
Jeannette Littlemore (University of Birmingham, UK)

Call for Papers:

We invite interested researchers to submit proposals for presentations on topics related to cognitive linguistics, such as the structural characteristics of categorization systems in language (prototypicality, metaphor and metonymy, image schemas, etc.), functional principles of linguistic organization, the relationship between language and thought, the conceptual interaction between syntax and semantics or the experiential basis of language in use.

We especially welcome submissions dealing with the applications of cognitive linguistics to other fields such as the teaching or acquisition of languages, lexicography, the analysis of different types of discourse (language for specific purposes, multi-modal discourse, etc.) or translation, among others.

Researchers interested in participating may send proposals for a paper (20 minutes for the oral presentation followed by 8 minutes’ discussion), thematic session (a 90-minute session consisting of between 3 and 5 papers on a specific topic, which will be proposed by the coordinator of the theme session) or poster (which will be reserved a slot in the programme to allow authors to discuss their work with other delegates). Abstracts should be submitted by 1 April 2014 using the following form:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
