8th Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval (RuSSIR 2014), Call for Course Proposals

Course proposals deadline: 9 March 2014

The 8th Russian Summer School in Information Retrieval (RuSSIR 2014)will be held on August 18-22, 2014 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. The school is co-organized by the National Research University Higher School of Economics in Nizhny Novgorod (http://nnov.hse.ru/en/) and the Russian Information Retrieval Evaluation Seminar (ROMIP, http://romip.ru/en/). RuSSIR 2014 is planned to have an additional focus on visualization for Information Retrieval (IR).

The missions of the RuSSIR school series are to enable students to learn about modern problems and methods in information retrieval and related disciplines; to stimulate scientific research and collaboration in the field; and to create an environment for informal contacts between scientists, students and industry professionals. 

RuSSIR 2014 will offer up to seven courses and host approximately 100 participants. The target audience of the school is advanced graduate and PhD students, academic and industrial researchers, and developers. The working language of the school is English.

RuSSIR 2014 welcomes course proposals on any aspect of IR theory and applications, as well as visualization for IR including, but not limited to:
- IR models
- Web and social media IR
- System architectures and scalability
- Content representation and analysis
- User aspects and interaction models for IR
- Multimedia IR
- Evaluation and user studies
- Information visualization methods
- Text analytics
- Visual analytics
- Perceptual and cognitive aspects
- Applications

Each course should consist of five 90-minute-long sessions (normally in five consecutive days) and may include both lectures and practical exercises.

Summer school organizers will cover travel expenses and accommodation for one lecturer per course; no additional honorarium will be paid to lecturer(s). The school organizers would highly appreciate if, whenever possible, lecturers could find alternative funding to cover the travel and accommodation expenses, and indicate this possibility in their proposals.

Course proposals must be submitted in PDF format to the submission web site: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=russir2014, by March 9, 2014. 

A course proposal should contain the following:
- Title and keywords
- Description of teaching and research experience, and contact information of the lecturer(s)
- Relevance of the course to the school's scope and objectives
- Brief description of the course (up to 300 words suitable for inclusion in school materials)
- Full description (1-2 pages - to be used for evaluation)
- Target audience and expected prerequisite knowledge of the audience
- Relevant references to support proposal evaluation
- Preferred schedule and necessary equipment

All proposals will be evaluated by the program committee according to the school's goals, the clarity of presentation, and the lecturers' qualifications and experience. All applicants will be notified of the committee's decision by March 25, 2014. Early informal inquiries about the school or the proposal evaluation process are encouraged.

About RuSSIR: the school series started in 2007 and has developed into a renowned academic event with solid international participation.
Previous schools took place in Yekaterinburg, Taganrog, Petrozavodsk, Voronezh, Saint Petersburg, Yaroslavl, and Kazan. Previous RuSSIR courses were taught by many prominent IR researchers and scholars from cognate fields.

About the venue: Nizhny Novgorod is a beautiful historical city located about 400 km east of Moscow. The city lies on the confluence of the Volga and the Oka rivers. The population of the city is about 1.3 million people. The 16th century Kremlin is the central historic citadel of the city. Nizhny Novgorod will be one of the sites of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The most convenient way to reach Nizhny Novgorod from abroad is to arrive to Moscow and change to a high-speed train; Nizhny Novgorod airport has also direct connection to Frankfurt, Prague, and Istanbul. RuSSIR teachers will be assisted in obtaining Russian visas if needed.

Higher School of Economics (HSE) is a young and fast-growing university. Founded in 1992, it was rewarded the status of National Research University in October 2009. The HSE has grown into a multiregional structure housing its education and research facilities in four campuses (Moscow, Saint- Petersburg, Perm, and Nizhny Novgorod). HSE - Nizhny Novgorod campus was established in 1996. It offers high-quality education within its 5 faculties, 3 laboratories, and 19 academic departments.
