Description:
Applicants should be able to teach courses on the structure of English (esp. syntax, morphology, etc.) at undergraduate level as well as have a teaching specialism in English Linguistics that complements and extends the existing teaching and research strengths in the Linguistics section of the Department. The successful applicant will join a small but active teaching and research unit in Linguistics within the English Department that includes Prof. David Britain (variationist sociolinguistics; dialect contact; language, mobility and space) and Prof. Crispin Thurlow (language and globalization; tourism discourse; language and new media). Teaching and research in linguistics is also conducted in the Departments of General Linguistics, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Slavic Studies, and all linguists collaborate in the Humanities Faculty’s Center for the Study of Language in Society.
Academic requirements for this position are a completed PhD, with resulting publications, as well as an advanced postdoc project. The successful applicant will be expected to teach 5 courses per year spread across the two teaching semesters (a course, such as a lecture or a seminar, lasts for one semester and comprises one 90-minute session per week), to supervise BA and MA theses, as well as to participate in the department’s administrative tasks.
People holding ‘Dozentur’ positions are paid on the Canton of Bern’s salary scale GK23 (GK 25 if the applicant has already successfully completed a Habilitation.
