Meeting Description:

Contact, Variation and Change: Afro-Latin Language Varieties, Aarhus University, Denmark, December 4-5, 2014. 

The focus of this workshop is on linguistic analysis of the Afro-Spanish and Afro-Portuguese varieties, and computational models related to the study of contact varieties. The workshop aims to enhance cross-linguistic research about varieties of Spanish and Portuguese in contact with African Languages, the materials and corpora available for the study of Afro-Latin varieties, and the computational models and programs for analyzing varieties involving contact, variation and change.

The workshop is organized by Eeva Sippola and Ana Paulla Braga Mattos, members of the Cognitive Creolistics project at Aarhus University. A previous version of the workshop focusing on corpora development was organized at Stockholm University in April 2014.

Call for Papers:

The research topics of interest in this workshop include the following areas: 

a) Comparative analysis of varieties of Spanish and Portuguese in contact with African languages
b) Studies of diachronic and synchronic phenomena in contact languages, providing replicable research using up-to-date statistical methods
c) Methodological issues: How can computational linguistics contribute to the field? How can we use the available tools for typological and lexical analysis? How can we make materials of less described varieties available to researchers in related fields? 

The workshop is organized by Eeva Sippola and Ana Paulla Braga Mattos, members of the Cognitive Creolistics project at Aarhus University. A previous version of the workshop focusing on corpora development was organized at Stockholm University in April 2014.

You are welcome to send abstracts to Eeva Sippola (linesippola at dac.au.dk) no later than August 15, 2014. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and sent as a PDF file. Notification of acceptance can be expected by September 1, 2014.
