Book title (preliminary): The growth of English in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina 

This prospective book is currently under consideration by the UK publishing company Multilingual Matters (www.multilingual-matters.com). 

Synopsis:
This book traces the development of English in different sectors of society in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) since 1995. It aims to provide an overview of the different institutional, societal, linguistic and educational issues involved in the spread and use of English since the collapse of the former Yugoslavia. The selection of studies included in this volume provide a broader, ‘big picture’ perspective balanced by personal, lived experiences on the ground. 
The book aims to present a selection of scholarly studies intended for use in university contexts at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. It is relevant to courses on language planning and policy, language contact, sociolinguistics, English for academic purposes, English for specific purposes, English as an international language. 
While having a scholarly focus, this book also aims to be accessible and of relevance to an interested readership beyond the disciplines of English language teaching, linguistics and education. Over the last 20 years, many people from all around the world have visited and worked in BiH; some chapters in the book could thus potentially find interest among those who are not directly involved in education, but who have a general interest in Bosnian society. 

The editor of this book is Louisa Buckingham. Proposals (and all queries) should be sent to her at the email address below. Proposals should be submitted preferably by 15 July, 2014. A brief biography of the editor is included at the end of this announcement.

Topic areas of interest :
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 
1. The development of human resources and institutional capacity for the provision of EFL
2. The acquisition of English in the during- and immediate post-war context 
3. English for academic purposes
4. English and translation and interpreting
5. English in the professions (e.g., banking, tourism, legal consultants, the army, the police)
6. Language contact: English and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (B/H/S) (e.g., the increased use of English words in B/H/S over the last 20 years. A look at language use in, for instance, the media, advertising, or tourism)
7. The future of English in BiH

Guidelines for prospective authors:
Chapters should aim to be between 6,000 and 9,000 words in length (including tables and references). Authors may include tables, figures and photos (black and white), as required, to support their study. References should follow APA style. Single or co-authored chapters are welcomed. Authors may submit more than one proposal. The selection of chapters to be included will be made on the basis of the proposals submitted. 

When writing your proposal, please respond to the following points:
Please submit a chapter proposal of around 300-400 words (include a list of references cited at the end). Please include the following points: Outline of topic, indication of the data used in study, indication of relevance of topic and contribution to the existing literature.
Please also include a short biography (around 100 words). This is required by the publisher. Relevant information to include:  your studies, work experience, brief note of publications and research interests. In short, anything that would help us appreciate what you, as the author, would bring to your proposed chapter. 

Biography of Editor: Louisa Buckingham (Department of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, University of Auckland) worked for almost two years in Banja Luka as a project assistant on a reconstruction project in the late 1990s. From 2001 to 2004 she was a lecturer in the Department of English and German at the University of Tuzla and also worked with the Pedagoski Zavod for Tuzla Canton during this period. She has published studies in a number of international journals such as International journal of Applied Linguistics, TESOL Quarterly, and Discourse & Society.
