Meeting Description:
The Department of Pragmatics, of the Institute of English, University of Silesia has the pleasure
to announce the second edition of the Sosnowiec Meetings, whose main aim is to gather
representatives of different academic disciplines, investigating the same concepts from
different perspectives, and to provide a forum for exchange of opinions for all members of
Academia interested.
We are pleased to announce that the following scholars have accepted to address the Meeting
as plenary speakers:
- Prof. zw. dr hab. Eugenia Mandal, Institute of Psychology, University of Silesia
- Prof. zw. dr hab. Kazimiera Wódz, Institute of Sociology, University of Silesia
The Symposium will be held, from 17 to 18 December 2014, in the Modern Languages Centre,
Faculty of Philology, University of Silesia, ul. Grota Roweckiego 5, 41-205 Sosnowiec, Poland.
No conference fee.
Call for Papers:
The leading theme of this year Meeting is: Faces of Masculinity. The meeting especially
focuses, but is not limited to, the concept of masculinity. We welcome contributions that
address, explore or analyse the concept as well as the works that present theoretical
developments and practical applications of the following issues:
- Social varieties of language
- Registers
- The concept of masculinity as a folk concept
- The concept of masculinity as an academic concept
- Cross-cultural and intercultural communication
- Patterns of behaviour related to a particular gender identity
- Self-presentation
- Gender stereotypes
- Social perception of masculinity
- Masculinity as a positive / negative value
- Masculinity in literature
- Masculinity over the centuries
Our meeting is addressed to theoreticians and researchers from different academic
disciplines, such as linguistics, literary science, psychology, sociology, communication
studies and philosophy. However, we also welcome studies on masculinity concerning
issues other than the mentioned above and conducted within disciplines other than
enumerated.
Abstracts of no more than 300 words (excluding references) should be sent by email as a
Word attachment to ewa.jakubowska at us.edu.pl by 15 October 2014. The body of the
email should include the name(s) of the author(s), affiliation, email address and paper
title. The authors will be notified of acceptance via email by 1 November 2014.
