Meeting Description:

'Accents' is an annual conference organized by the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Łódź, Poland. It brings together researchers and teachers interested in  native and non-native accents of English, approached from a variety of theoretical and/or practical perspectives. Key issues discussed each year include individual accent characteristics, the dynamism of accent usage, accent teaching and learning, the methods and tools for accent studies. ACCENTS 2014  hope to continue the discussion of characteristics, variability and function of phonetic/pronunciation features in natural as well as in formal teaching contexts, focusing on the relationship between pronunciation research and pronunciation teaching by exploring what happens when 'accents go to school'.

The following plenary speakers will address different aspects of the ACCENTS 2014 main theme 'Pronunciation Research in Action':

Włodzimierz Sobkowiak, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań 
Robin Walker, IATEFL-PronSIG 

Come and join us to discuss accents/the pronunciation of English in an informal atmosphere in Łódź in December. We invite talks, workshops, posters and panels on all issues related to the main theme and all other aspects of ACCENTS.

Call for Papers:

We invite proposals for papers, workshops and posters related to the main theme 'pronunciation research in action' and exploring the relationship between pronunciation research and pronunciation teaching as well as other issues related to native and non-native accents of English, including, but not limited to the ones mentioned below:  

- Researching accents/pronunciation of English   
- Applications of accent/pronunciation research  
- Pronunciation research vs. classroom practice 
- Teaching accents/pronunciation  
- Priorities in pronunciation teaching 
- Interaction between L1 and L2 sound systems 
- Functions of phonetics features in interaction 
- Spoken (learner) corpora 
- Variability in accents  
- Phonetics in conversation analysis
- Accents of English around the world 'New Englishes', 'Euro-Englishes', etc.

Please notice that each author can propose two contributions provided that one of them is co-authored.  Papers are given 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for discussion, workshops will typically have 45 minute slots. Please specify the intended presentation format in your proposal.

The deadline for abstract submission is July 31, 2014. Please send two copies of an abstract of up to 400 words (excluding references) to accents at uni.lodz.pl, with the intended format, name and affiliation written under the title in one copy. The proposals will go through the process of peer review, after which notifications of acceptance will be sent out by August 31, 2014.
