Meeting Description:

The University of Jyväskylä and its research community specializing in applied linguistics and language learning and education are proud to welcome you to the 2nd International Conference on Interactivity, Language and Cognition, CILC II, in September, 2014.

We are very pleased to announce that Professor Stephen Cowley (University of Southern Denmark, Odense) and Professor Paul Thibault (University of Agder, Kristianshavn, Norway) will be our invited speakers.

In recent years, both the cognitive and linguistic sciences have profoundly changed their view of foundational concepts such as language and cognition. Cognitivist views have been challenged by approaches that do not localize cognition within the individual, but, rather, investigate it across distributed systems that integrate neural and bodily resources, other persons and material artifacts. At the same time, essentialist and monological theories of language have increasingly been rejected. While language is now often investigated with respect to analysis of first-order interactivity, interesting changes are also afoot with respect to both second-order language or, in other terms, the domain of verbal patterning and order.

Much of this work has been carried out by people working within the Distributed Language Group (DLG) and within research clusters representing different fields of study. In September 2012, the first CILC conference was organized in the University of Southern Denmark, Odense. On this occasion, International Society for the Study of Interactivity, Language and Cognition (ISSILC) was established to continue and further develop the research that draws on these perspectives (see, http://issilc.org/).

CILC II Institutions, Interactivity, Individuals
September 10-12, 2014
University of Jyväskylä, Finland

The theme of the conference is Institutions, Interactivity, Individuals. From the post-monological and post-cognitivist starting points mentioned above, we invite researchers from fields such as cognitive science, applied and theoretical linguistics, communication, education, psychology, and biology to present research relating to this theme. Papers focusing on issues of language, cognition and interactivity in a general way are equally welcome. We welcome papers discussing theoretical and methodological issues as well as papers that investigate interactivity from the point of view of individuals or institutions in contexts such as education, organizations, or health.

We invite submissions of abstracts for papers (20+10 min) and posters presenting current research. Proposed papers will be anonymously reviewed by two reviewers. In collaboration with ISSILC, two pre-conference workshops will be organized on Tuesday, September 9.

The language of the conference is English. To submit an abstract, please go to the conference website at www.jyu.fi/cilc2014 and follow the instructions. The closing date for submissions will be June 1, 2014. Notification of acceptance will be given by June 13, 2014.

If you have any further queries, please contact us by email at cilc2014 at jyu.fi.

Organizing Committee:
