The Dynamics of Youth Language in Africa

Call information
Young people utilise language as a tool for exclusion and to disrupt the ideological and mainstream linguistic order. Youth is the age of communicative creativity in which language undergoes different kinds of changes. They are described as the linguistic movers and shakers and are prime sources of information about linguistic change and the role of language in social practices. They use language to conceptualise identity, enhance solidarity, foster group integration and reinforce anti-establishment behaviour. Youth language is an essential element in the creation of urban sub-culture and group's dynamics.

This Special Issue aims at investigating the ways and the extent to which the new linguistic ideologies of youth language are rapidly informed by changing sociolinguistic ecologies. It will examine how dense social networks are usually responsible for linguistic non-conformism and innovation among youth and why youth language is a kind of strategic essentialism. Our goal is to achieve a more tolerant view of youth language as this may facilitate a better understanding of youth's communication style and alleviate miscommunication since these tendencies are only a part of their search for identity. The Special Issue will primarily address (but not limited to) the following issues with focus on Africa:
- Urban jargon in the emergent youth identities.
- Youth language and its varieties in the urban space.
- The sociolinguistics of hip-hop culture.
- The bilingual/Plurilingual varieties of youth discourse.
- Socio-historical trajectories that give rise to youth language.
- Socially constructed dialectics of youth language.
- Lexically and contextually driven in-group codes (argot, anti-language, slang etc).
- Rich imageries and the creative possibilities of youth language.
- Forms, functions and typology of deviant language use.
- The sociopragmatics of youth performances

Each article should be situated within the growing body of empirical data with appropriate theoretical and methodological framing.

Submission of Abstract/Proposal  - July 1, 2014
Notification of acceptance of Abstract/Proposal - July 15, 2014
Submission of full article (7000-8000 words) - January 31, 2015
Notification of Acceptance/Rejection of Article - May 15, 2015
Expected publication Date - December 2015
