The Department of Linguistics is seeking applications for a
Postdoctoral Researcher Position
(Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100%)
The position is available as of 1 September 2014 and lasts for three years. In principle, this position can be divided into two half-time positions.
It is part of a research project on "Bias in Polar Questions" (PIs: Prof. Bettina Braun and Prof. Maribel Romero) funded by the DFG Priority Programme "XPrag.de: New Pragmatic Theories based on Experimental Evidence",
http://www.dfg.de/foerderung/info_wissenschaft/archiv/2013/info_wissenschaft_13_14/index.html
Project description
Polar questions, while retaining their information-seeking function, may convey a bias: original epistemic bias of the speaker and contextual evidence bias. The goals of the project are: (i) to establish a wide-ranging empirical characterization of the phenomenon based on experimental production and perception data, with special attention to pragmatic context and intonation, and (ii) to develop a comprehensive analysis of the different forms and functions of biased polar questions that also explains cross linguistic differences between English and German.
Profile of the applicants
Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent degree) by the time the appointment begins. Candidates with a background in linguistics, phonetics, psycholinguistics, or related fields are welcome to apply. The optimal candidate has a specialization in experimental semantics/pragmatics or intonation, with sufficient background in the other area. Their tasks will include: planning the experiments in the light of semantic/pragmatic theories, creating the experimental procedures and, together with the PIs, analyzing and interpreting the results in the light of the theoretical questions.
