The clause edge is one of the main topics in current syntactic analysis. Following Rizzi's (1997) groundbreaking work on the internal structure of a split Complementizer Phrase, a large set of phenomena involving the left periphery of the clause has drawn the attention of many theoretical linguists.

However, while our knowledge of the encoding of sentential Force or of Topic and Focus configurations or of Movement to and inside CP is becoming deeper and deeper, much has still to be discovered on the nature of complementizers as a lexical category and about the patterns of variation in their morpho-syntax, both intra- and inter-linguistically. Recent works have shown that on the one hand Complementizers have nominal features (Sportiche (2008); Kayne (2010); Manzini-Savoia (2011)), on the other their morpho-syntax can encode Aspect, Tense and Modality values, agreement, illocutive and other features (see among many others Bayer (1984), Bhatt and Yoon (1992), Haegeman (1992), Van Craenenbroeck & Van Koppen (2003), Ledgeway (2005), Aboh (2006)). All these properties have to be dealt with simultaneously in order to obtain a descriptively adequate theory.

The goal of the Variation in C Workshop is to rise to this challenge. In particular, we are interested in micro- and macro-comparative approaches that can shed light on this topic through the analytical methods of comparative linguistics, both synchronic and diachronic.

Call for Papers:

We invite contributions that address the following questions:

- What can comparative analyses tell us about complementizers as a lexical category and about the features they encode?
- What is the range of variation documented cross-linguistically?
- Are current theoretical models able to deal adequately with the observed variation?

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute talks (+ 10 minutes for discussions). Abstracts should be anonymous and should not exceed two pages in length (including examples and references):

-A4 format
-12-point Times New Roman
-2,5 cm (1 in.) margins

Submissions are limited to 1 individual and 1 joint abstract per author, or 2 joint abstracts per author.

Abstract should be sent as PDF attachments in a mail to variationincws at gmail.com by no later than 15 July 2014.

Name(s) of author(s), title of paper, affiliation(s), email address(es) and contact detail(s) should be in the body of the mail. A notification of acceptance and a provisional programme will be sent by the end of August 2014.
