Description:

The Concept Lab, one of three projects within the Cambridge Centre for Digital Knowledge, is seeking to appoint a full-time postdoctoral research associate in computational humanities and/or corpus linguistics. The Research Associate will report to the project director, Professor Peter de Bolla, and be expected to develop, refine and test the evolving methodology of the Lab. The Research Associate will be required to participate in the weekly work-in-progress meetings of the Lab as well as attend termly workshops that will bring RAs from a number of projects together. These include other projects in the Centre for Digital Knowledge and two EU funded projects that are running simultaneously on the early modern period, one on the idea of ‘genius’ pre the romantic period and the other on the concept of knowledge in early modern England. In addition the RA will assist the project director in developing modes of exchange between the Lab in Cambridge and its sister Lab in New York directed by Professor Clifford Siskin. They will also be centrally involved in designing the web output of the project and constructing a repository of the data generated.

Project Summary
The Concept Lab is part of the Cambridge Centre for Digital Knowledge (CCDK), based at CRASSH.The CCDK acts as a framework for a constellation of projects (the Concept Lab and the Digital Society) that explore the digital and society.

The Concept Lab aims to develop a set of techniques we call ‘parsing concepts’ which set out to describe and analyse the architecture of conceptual forms. Over the three years of the project we aim to generate a suite of tools that are exportable to any historical period and, in the long run, usable in any natural language domain. These tools are intended to help us understand how concepts are structured and, as importantly, what might be required to generate new concepts.

Familiarity with programming languages, such as Python, C, PHP or R. Familiarity with techniques such as text mining, quantitative analysis, applied statistics, topic modelling, visualization of data, or programming experience in text extraction. Knowledge of web-based application programming in javascript, php, or other web development language is desirable but not required.
