Meeting Description:

Linguists the world over are seized with concern that 96% of the world’s languages are spoken by about 3% of the world’s people, and the UNESCO Ad Hoc Expert Group's on Endangered Languages' estimate that, in most world regions, about 90% of the languages may be replaced by dominant languages by the end of the 21st century. 

In India, too, there is reason for concern, given the great language shift away from minority languages that is being observed amongst linguistic minorities. Nevertheless, even as there is a universal agreement on the impact that language death/loss has on the culture, belongingness, and  knowledge system of  minority communities, Indian linguists, educationists, and state policy has yet to take the initiative for evolving a set of best practices in ensuring the vitality of vulnerable and/or endangered minority Indian languages. 

This workshop is an initial step in the direction of building strategies for (re-)vitalisation of minority Indian languages, by bringing together linguists with experiences of working with such language communities, with a special focus on (a) a delineation of the range of issues that enable a clear statement about the vitality of the language, and (b) the measures that have or may be undertaken to (re-)vitalise the language in the community. This workshop is being organised on the occasion of Dr. Marianne Ignace and other eminent linguists at Simon Fraser University's visit to JNU (funded by SFU, JNU, and the government of Canada). Dr. Marianne Ignace is Director of the First Nations Language Centre, and an expert on the traditional knowledge systems, ethnohistory, and the linguistic analysis of First Nations languages. She has worked on several language revitalisation projects with First Nations communities and elders, and will lead the workshop.

Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts for 20 minute oral/poster presentations as well as poster sessions. Abstracts must be anonymous, and emailed to jnuclworkshops at gmail.com. Abstracts should not be longer than two pages in length (including tables, examples and references), in 12-point type, single line spacing and 2.5 cm. margins, and must be provided in both .docx and pdf format. 

With the assistance of the CIIL, limited funding for travel (by train only) is available for a few outstation participants. Accommodation for a few participants may also be arranged (upon payment), but is not guaranteed.
