Full Title: Conference on Reference Impersonals

Date: 04-Feb-2015 - 05-Feb-2015
Location: Paris, France
Contact Person: Patricia Cabredo Hofherr
Meeting Email: pcabredo at univ-paris8.fr
Web Site: http://www.umr7023.cnrs.fr/Colloque-R-impersonnels-Conference.html

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Morphology; Semantics; Syntax; Typology

Call Deadline: 20-Nov-2014

Meeting Description:

The conference focuses on the morphological, syntactic and semantic properties of impersonal pronouns allowing human reference such as English one, they, you, French on, ils, ça, tu, Germanic man/men, Spanish uno and 3pl null subjects (R-impersonals in Siewierska’s terminology).

Invited Speakers:

 - Denis Creissels (DDL - Lyon)
 - Gilles Polian (CIESAS, San Cristóbal de las Casas)

This conference is part of the project Towards a typology of human impersonal pronouns (ANR-DFG).

The conference will be followed by a Workshop on Sign languages and R-impersonal pronouns
on Friday, 6 February 2015, at the CNRS Pouchet-Center, Paris, France

Call for Papers:

We encourage submissions exploring questions including, but not limited to, the following:

- What are the differences between episodic and generic uses of impersonal pronouns? Why do some pronouns not admit episodic uses? Is this contrast better understood in terms of inclusiveness (generic being inclusive while episodic impersonals are exclusive of the speaker)?
- What readings are available for the different case-forms of the pronouns?
- Why do impersonal human pronouns often have defective (French on) or suppletive (German man) oblique forms?
- What are binding properties of impersonal human pronouns?
- What semantic restrictions are found for impersonal readings (types of predicates, inclusive vs exclusive readings, role of locative expressions in the licensing of impersonal readings)?
- How do impersonal human pronouns differ from indefinite pronouns like someone, impersonal uses of personal pronouns (3pl and 2sg/pl), and from the human subject implicit in the interpretation of impersonal verb forms and passives?

We invite submissions for 25-minute presentations (plus ten-minute discussions). Abstracts should be at most 2 pages in length (including examples and references) written in French or English.

Abstracts must be anonymous and should be sent by e-mail (plain ASCII, rtf or pdf) to: pcabredo at univ-paris8.fr

Please write the (first) author’s name plus the word ’abstract’ in the subject line of your message (e.g., ’Dupont abstract’), and include author name(s), affiliation, contact information and the title of the abstract in the body of the email. For co-authored papers indicate the email address that we should use
for correspondence.

Abstracts should reach us by November 20, 2014.

This workshop is part of the project: Towards a typology of human impersonal pronouns (Typoimp) (ANR-DFG).

Abstract submission deadline : November 20, 2014.
Notification of acceptance : December 5, 2014
Conference : February 4-5, 2015
