CUHK is an international, research-intensive university whose faculty engages
in effective teaching, innovative research, and impactful service. The
Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages is a young and vibrant
Department established in 2004. The primary medium of instruction is English
at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As part of the Department’s
strategic plan, it invites applications for a professoriate position in
phonology.
Applicants whose research crosses multiple areas of linguistics and cognate
areas are especially welcomed. The Department is particularly interested in
applicants whose research has a strong grounding in linguistic theory and who
employ conventional and/or contemporary research methods to address core
issues in linguistics.
Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in a related discipline; (ii) strong
commitment to excellence in research and teaching; and (iii) an established
track record in phonology. Research expertise in the languages of China and
the region will be an advantage.
The appointee will (a) teach undergraduate and postgraduate linguistics
courses; (b) supervise projects and theses of undergraduate, MA, MPhil and PhD
students; (c) develop research in his/her areas of expertise; and (d)
undertake administrative duties.
Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years
initially commencing August 2015, which, subject to mutual agreement, may lead
to longer-term appointment or substantiation later.
Salary and Fringe Benefits
Salary will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and
experience. The University offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package,
including medical care, plus a contract-end gratuity for an appointment of two
years or longer and housing benefits for eligible appointees.
