The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)
The UAB College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) invites applications for the
position of Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. The
department (http://www.uab.edu/cas/languages/) has 18 full-time faculty
members and offers a BA degree within a nationally ranked teaching and
research urban university of over 18,000 students. It offers major tracks in
Spanish and French, as well as minors or certificates in Chinese, French,
German, Japanese, Spanish, Spanish for Specific Purposes, and Business
Spanish. The Department also partners with the School of Education in a
Masters program in Foreign Language Education and offers a variety of study
away classes and programs.
The successful candidate will have a record of excellence in scholarship,
teaching, and administration. The Chair is responsible for overall
departmental administration and reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and
Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to provide strategic
direction, vision, and leadership and to participate actively in development
across the UAB campus and in the city of Birmingham. There is an opportunity
for significant growth of the department in the coming years, and the new
Chair is expected to play an active role in the development of Foreign
Languages and Literatures at UAB.
The Chair is the chief academic, financial, and strategic officer for the
Department. He or she will work to recruit and retain outstanding faculty and
students at all levels, contribute to the intellectual life of the department
as an active member of the faculty, and promote the department within the
University and, as importantly, outside the University to secure support. A
PhD with a specialization in Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, or a
comparable field is required. Candidates must possess a distinguished record
of scholarship, teaching, and professional service consistent with appointment
at the rank of Full Professor with tenure. Candidates must exhibit excellent
interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, and interest in
fundraising and development is welcome.
