University or Organization: University of Macau
Job Location: China, Macau
Web Address: http://www.umac.mo/vacancy
Job Title: Professor of Translation Studies
Job Rank: Full Professor
Specialty Areas: Translation
Description:
The University of Macau is the leading higher education institution in Macao,
with English as its working language. In recent years, the University has been
making great progress towards becoming internationally recognized for its
excellence in teaching, research and service. With the beautiful new campus
(20 times larger than the old one) becoming fully operational recently, the
launch of Asia’s largest residential college system, the establishment of new
schools, and the increasing numbers of students and faculty members recruited
from around the world, UM provides great potential and exciting new
possibilities for growth and development.
The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites
applications for the position of Professor of Translation Studies.
The Department of English is an expanding and lively scholarly community with
a strong international profile comprising three main fields of interest:
translation studies, literature and linguistics. In addition to its
undergraduate Minor programme in Translation Studies, the department offers MA
programmes in Translation Studies and in English Studies, as well as PhD
supervision across the range of the department’s expertise. In translation the
department has particular strengths in discourse/function-oriented,
corpus-assisted and cognitive translation studies. The Faculty of Arts and
Humanities has also approved the establishment of a Centre for Translation,
Interpreting and Cognition Studies.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a PhD in Translation Studies or another
related area, teaching experience at tertiary institutions and a track record
of quality research publications appropriate to the rank of Full Professor.
Applicants for the position should demonstrate excellence in teaching and
academic supervision, as well as a good record of research grant applications.
Applications in all areas of Translation Studies will be considered, but those
in the area of applied Translation Studies will be particularly welcome. It is
expected that the successful candidate will specialise in Chinese-English
translation, but expertise in other languages will also be considered. An
appointment may be offered at Associate Professor rank if the appointment
panel considers this more appropriate to a candidate’s experience and
qualifications.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2015.
Position and Remuneration
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate
with the successful applicants’ academic qualification, current position and
professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but
is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
Application Procedure
Applicants should visit the URL above for more details, and apply ONLINE at
Jobs at UM (application URL below) (Ref. No.: FAH/TRANS/08/2015). Review of
applications will commence on 1st December 2014 and continue until the
position is filled. Applicants may consider their applications not successful
if they were not invited for an interview within 3 months of application.
The effective position and salary index are subject to the Personnel Statute
of the University of Macau in force. The University of Macau reserves the
right not to appoint a candidate. Applicants with less qualification and
experience can be offered lower positions under special circumstances.
