Meeting Description:

In the field of language acquisition studies, mainly two big grammatical theories seem to be opposed: Generative Grammar and Construction Grammar. Whereas GG is to assume highest possible economy in language processing (e.g. low processing costs for automatical syntactic processes in comparison to lexical-semantic ones), especially concerning language acquisition, the «efficiency principle» does not seem to be of great importance in CG. However, examining the ideas of CG more closely, we will identify efficiency in a different way (e.g. always the same procedures of acquisition processes, no separation between lexicon and grammar).

Based on the question in what respect economy is crucial in processes of language acquisition, we want to discuss if it is possible to establish a grammatical theory that combines both approaches. Such a model could potentially answer several questions concerning language acquisition in a more efficient and more accurate way.

Call for Papers:

The following topics shall be disussed:

- GG versus CG – or GG AND CG?
- The role of grammar and lexicon
- The role of semantics
- Differences between First- and Second-Language-Acquisition? Bilingualism? Language Pathology?
- The problem of the data
- The role of sociolinguistic factors and of context
- Collocations and phraseologisms in language acquisition

Contributions in german, french, italian, spanish and english are welcome.
