Living the material world

EM/CA research has long examined matters of materiality within practices for the creation, understanding and organization of social order, activity, and interaction. Materiality figures, for example, as features of the physical surround, gesture and the body, space and location, mobility, objects, and multimodality. Within EM, investigations have considered, for example, queueing, maps and direction giving, scientific method, and technology use. CA studies have examined materiality across a wide range of settings and situations of ordinary conversation, as well as in professional and institutional interaction (e.g. collaborative work, health care, education, legal and police work, designing and innovation). In short, research shows how materiality realises sociality.

An EM/CA focus on the material world can involve particular challenges, such as isolating and accessing scenes of interest, capturing and representing data, identifying and interpreting phenomena, settling on evidence and analytic approach, developing argument, forming conceptualisations and findings, and connecting across scholarly disciplines.

2nd Call for Papers:

We call for submissions from the international community of EM/CA scholars for the IIEMCA conference 2015 in Kolding, Denmark. We welcome contributions across the broad areas of interest for EM/CA research, and especially addressing the conference theme on how people organize, conduct and accomplish their activities and interactions for ‘living the material world’.

We particularly invite submissions from the international community of EM/CA scholars that address ‘living the material world’. Broad areas of interest relating to the conference theme can include at least:

- Scene and setting
- Location, spatiality and mobility
- Gesture, the body and its positioning and movement
- Objects and artefacts
- Designing, crafting, and making
- Sensing and experiencing
- Creating and learning
- Instruction and learning
- Data and methods for representation and analysis 

Submissions on topics outside the conference theme are also very welcome.
