Description:
Applications and enquiries are invited from qualified and motivated students wishing to pursue a PhD degree within an Australian Research Council Project, led by the University of Newcastle, Australia on the Proto-Australian hypothesis - that all the languages of Australia are related as members of a single language family.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The PhD project would contribute to all aspects of the project, with a principal focus on reconstructing the Ngarna language family. This would include preparation of a descriptive grammar of Yanyuwa based on extensive existing materials.

Dr Robert Mailhammer, University of Western Sydney
The PhD scholarship, offered for three years, provides a tax-free living allowance of AU$25,392 p.a. in 2014 (indexed annually). In addition to meeting standard resource requirements, such as desk space, internet access and research resources, the University of Newcastle also provides a new laptop and funds for travel to conferences to commencing students. International students will also be awarded a tuition fee scholarship which meets the tuition fee costs and provides Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the tenure of the award.
Requirements:
We're looking for somebody with an M.A., BA (Honours) or equivalent in one or more of the following desirable areas:
- Historical Linguistics;
- Language Description;
- Morphosyntax;
- Typology.
Both international and Australian applicants will be considered. The successful candidate must be willing to be located in or near Newcastle for the full period of the scholarship.
