Description:

Position Description: 
The Department of Linguistics/TESL at California State University, Northridge,
seeks a generalist in Linguistics.  The successful candidate will be familiar
with descriptive and theoretical approaches to linguistics and will be able to
teach two or more of the following areas:
- Bilingualism
- Computational linguistics
- Historical linguistics
- History of linguistics
- Language acquisition
- Linguistic typology-universals
- Morphology
- Pragmatics
- Psycholinguistics
- Semantics
- Syntax (functional, generative, etc.)

Qualifications: 
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or closely related field in hand
prior to date of appointment.  Experience teaching courses in linguistics or
related discipline is required.  Applicants must demonstrate ability to
effectively work with a highly diverse student population. Ability to develop
and teach graduate (MA-level) and undergraduate courses in linguistics is
desirable.

Evidence of teaching effectiveness, a willingness to advise master’s students,
potential for successful research, publication in the field of specialization,
and other scholarly and professional activities are highly desirable. 
Evidence of degree(s) required at time of hire.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must
have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to
work in the United States.

Responsibilities:  
The University seeks individuals who contribute to their chosen discipline
through scholarly activity and share the University’s commitment to teacher
preparation and general education.  All faculty are expected to serve on
departmental and/or university committees and to advise students.  The
standard teaching load is 12 units (typically four courses) per semester,
though reassigned time for research and curriculum development is available on
a competitive basis.  A willingness to teach evening classes is essential. 
Linguistics/TESL faculty also teach Linguistics courses offered by the English
Department at the undergraduate and graduate levels, some of which are
required in teaching credential programs. The successful candidate will teach
a variety of courses, and can expect to teach General Education courses on the
baccalaureate level, as well as MA and undergraduate courses in their field.
