Subject: Memorial for Dr. James E. Alatis
Georgetown University Press mourns the passing of Dr. James E. Alatis. An
editor on nineteen GURT ("Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and
Linguistics") volumes we published between 1969 and 2003, he was a veritable
champion of language education and a true friend of the press.
Please join Georgetown University's Department of Linguistics on Monday, April
27, to celebrate the life of James E. Alatis (1926-2015), Professor of
Linguistics and Dean Emeritus of the Georgetown University School of Languages
and Linguistics. The memorial will begin in the Gonda Theatre in the Davis
Performing Arts Center on Georgetown's campus 10-11 am to share memories of
Dr. Alatis, who played such a monumental role in establishing linguistics at
Georgetown. A reception will follow the memorial.
