Meeting Description:
Technological advances allow increasingly ecological and realistic descriptions of children's input to language acquisition, with recordings that are extensive (spanning whole days) and/or intensive (annotated at various levels, combining multiple modalities, etc.). This workshop seeks to bring together specialists from a variety of disciplines to gain a view of the state of the art in this quest, and to lay the foundations for broader collaboration. The workshop will be held at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris on December 7-8, 2015. Online participation via web interface will be available for some parts of the program.
The first day will consist of presentations (20' + 10' discussion) introducing unpublished corpus analyses and/or computational models on conceptual topics related to language acquisition. The second day will consist of parallel tutorials, round tables, and work groups (either 1 or 2 hours long).
Call for Presentations and Practical Sessions:
We are specifically soliciting proposals for presentations on the following conceptual topics:
- Comparisons between infant-, child-, and adult-directed speech
- Contributions of non-speech information (gestures, visual environment, context, etc.)
- Correlations between children's language attainments and their (multimodal) input.
- Comparisons of any of the above across cultures and/or social groups
We also welcome proposals for activities on day 2 (tutorials, round tables and work groups) on the following topics:
- Basic programming tools (perl, python, R, github, etc.) as they can be applied to the type of corpora and questions that interest our community
- Transcription and analysis tools (CLAN, Phon, Kaldi, etc.)
- Human and (semi-)automatized data annotation methods (prosody, co-speech and other gestures, gaze information, etc.)
- Ethical and legal considerations surrounding collecting, storing, and using real-world recordings
- The standardization of recording, transcription, and analysis procedures.
Submissions on other research and practical topics synergistic with the workshop's goals will also be considered.
