Meeting Description:
As in previous years, in the general conference (''Comparative and Diachronic Perspectives on Romanian''), we intend to cover a wide range of topics, encompassing all the domains and directions of research in the study of Romanian and in general linguistics, bringing together a large number of researchers from Romania and abroad.
Keynote Speakers:
Giuseppe Longobardi (University of York, U.K.)
Martin Maiden (University of Oxford, U.K.)
John-Charles Smith (University of Oxford, U.K.)
Furthermore, we will organize a workshop with the theme ''Romance Syntax. Comparative and Diachronic Perspectives'', co-organised with Dr. Michelle Sheehan (Anglia Ruskin University).
Call for Papers:
For the general conference (''Comparative and Diachronic Perspectives on Romanian''), we encourage a wide range of different types of abstracts, including but not limited to the following:
- Morphology, syntax, phonetics, and phonology
- Pragmatics and stylistics
- Lexicology and lexicography, semantics, and terminology
- History of language, philology, and dialectology
- Teaching Romanian as a mother tongue and as a foreign language
Conference languages: Romanian, English, French
For the workshop (''Romance Syntax. Comparative and Diachronic Perspective''), we invite proposals concerning issues in Romance syntax addressed from a comparative and/or diachronic perspective. Proposals dealing with more than one Romance variety will have priority in the selection process.
The workshop is devoted not only to general issues in Romance syntax (a)-(e), but also to particular issues related to the syntax of the Romance languages (f)-(j):
a. Syntactic variation in non-standard Romance varieties
b. The controversial delineation of a Romance type; how may this intuition be couched in the recent approaches to linguistic typology and parameterization
c. (Relatedly) the notion of Romance syntax as opposed to the Syntax of individual Romance languages / groups of Romance languages (e.g. Ibero-Romance, Italo-Romance, etc.)?
d. Macro- and micro-parametric variation in Romance
e. Variation in Romance paralled by variation in other language families
f. The height of verb-movement and noun-movement in different Romance varieties
g. Agreement
h. Alignment (accusative vs ergative vs active-stative)
i. Null arguments
j. Clitics
Workshop language: English
