Abstract:
The Bavarian language atlas, in which the numerous dialects within all of
Bavaria are recorded, is a communal project of five Bavarian universities,
whose results are published in six geographically segmented projects. The
comparability of the individual surveys is ensured by means of independent
data collections in the individual regions, the coordination of the survey, a
unified method, and thoroughly consistent questionnaires. The atlas offers a
representative sample from the collection of sounds and forms and the
vocabulary of the dialects of each region. Different from a dictionary, here
the regional distribution of individual linguistic phenomena is expressly and
visually represented in place-specific maps. In this way, the atlas is a work
which offers more information than a dialect dictionary; it is an archive for
obsolete dialects, a reference work for everyone who has an interest in the
language, history and culture of Bavaria. The individual projects of the
Bavarian language map are: I. The Language Map of Swabian-Bavaria (SBS), the
University of Augsburg, II. The Language Map of Middle Franconia (SMF),
University of Erlangen. III. The Language Map of Lower Franconia (SUF),
University of Wurzburg. IV: The Language Map of North-eastern Bavaria (The
administrative districts of Oberfranken and Oberpfalz, SNOB), University of
Bayreuth. V. The Language Map of Lower Bavaria (SNiB), University of Passau.
VI. Language Map of Upper Bavaria (SOB), University of Passau. The Bavarian
Language Map was edited by Robert Hinderling, Werner König, Ludwig Eichinger,
Hans-Werner Eroms, Horst Haider Munske and Norbert Wolf. (Universitätsverlag
