Abstract:
Two new, important methodological theories, perceptional dialectology and
dialectometry, have been established in the last few years, with whose help we
are able to pursue new approaches to the structure of linguistic areas.
According to an extensive analysis of traditional methods in mapping dialect
geographies and the evaluation of older classification methods, this book
presents an articulation of linguistic areas through an analysis of a single
test-area, Middle Franconia, in which the methods from all three fields were
considered: the traditional dialect-geography, the perceptional dialectology,
and dialectometry. The basis of the data used in this study was derived from
the surveys of the "Language Map of Middle Franconia" project, which used
extensive surveys consisting of over 2000 questions that were conducted in 167
places in Middle Franconia. The comparison of the three methodological
approaches and their results provide a conclusion to a serious linguistic
structuring of the research area but also offers insights over the
characteristics and the advantages and disadvantages of the methods.
