Abstract:

Grammaticalization is the process of changes in language, in which grammatical
units arise from lexical units. But how exactly does such a process occur?
Which fields of grammar are affected through such processes? This volume
grapples with these and similar questions. In addition to an introduction to
the important concepts of grammticalization research, the first part of the
volume offers a short overview of the development of this relatively new field
of research. The typical constituents of grammar, such as verbs, nouns,
adjectives, modal particles and connective adverbs are represented and
analyzed in individual chapters as the most important phenomena of
grammaticalization. In the last section, the most recent developments and
suggestions of this field of study are discussions as well as questions
related to the distinction between grammaticalization and other types of
changes in language. (Universitätsverlag Winter 2014)
