The 30th Annual Symposium on Arabic Linguistics provides a forum for scholars interested in the study of Arabic within current linguistic theories and analyses. Research interests focus on the following subfields of linguistics: theoretical linguistics (phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, morphology), historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics

The Arabic Linguistics Society and together with the Stony Brook University’s Department of Linguistics are pleased to announce the 30th Annual Symposium on Arabic Linguistics (ASAL). ASAL will take place in Stony Brook March 31-April 3, 2016, and will be held concurrently with the 46th Annual Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL) and a joint Workshop on Arabic and Romance Linguistics.

- Atiqa Hachimi, University of Toronto
- Ghada Khattab, Newcastle University 
- Usama Soltan, Middlebury College

Keynote Speakers, Workshop on Arabic and Romance Languages (WARL):

- Lotfi Sayahi, SUNY Albany
- Laura Minervini, University of Naples
- Robert Hoberman, Stony Brook University

Abstracts may be submitted for presentation in either ASAL or WARL.  For ASAL, papers are invited on topics that deal with theoretical and applied issues in Arabic linguistics. Research in the following areas is encouraged: linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics), sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, historical linguistics, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics. For WARL, research is encouraged in areas such as Romance/Arabic language contact, Romance/Arabic multilingualism, and Maltese linguistics.

Fees:

- Arabic Linguistics Society membership (required of all presenters): $35 for students and $50 for non-students.

- Through February 19, 2016: $35 for students and $60 for non-students

The Arabic Linguistics Society (ALS) announces the ALS Best Student Abstract Award to be offered for the first time at the 30th ASAL at Stony Brook University in New York. The award carries a monetary prize ($300) and goes to the highest-ranked student abstract as determined by the anonymous abstract review process. To be considered for the award, select ‘Yes’ in response to the question ‘Are you a student?’ on the Abstract Submission page. Only abstracts for which all authors are students will be considered.
