The Department of Romance Studies of the University of Cologne, Germany, invites applications for the following post in the team of Aria Adli (chair):

Postdoctoral Researcher/Lecturer in the Field of Sociolinguistics / Quantitative Linguistics of Romance Languages

Conditions of employment:

Fixed-term, full-time employment for the period of 3 years, position to be filled as of October 2015. 

Tasks of the successful applicant:

Conducting research in the field of quantitative linguistics, especially in the context of the new Sociolinguistic Lab at the University of Cologne. The candidate is also expected to assist ongoing projects and activities of the chair and the Sociolinguistic Lab, including grant applications.

Teaching (3 hours per week during class periods at undergraduate and/or Master level) covering two Romance languages, one of them preferably French linguistics. Candidates should teach classes in empirically oriented linguistics (quantitative sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, etc.), and general introductions into linguistics or into one of its subfields (e.g. syntax, morphology, semantics, or phonology). Teaching language is either the respective Romance language or German. 

Professional profile of the successful applicant:

Applicants must have a PhD in linguistics and demonstrate research experience on one or more Romance languages. 

The applicants should conduct research in variationist sociolinguistics, drawing on sound knowledge of grammar, phonology or typology, i.e. the preferred candidate demonstrates the ability to combine formal as well as quantitative approaches in her/his work. Applicants without a solid sociolinguistic background can apply if they have excellent knowledge in quantitative and/or corpus linguistics and convincingly lay out how they add a sociolinguistic line of research to their work.

Candidates are expected to be experienced in empirical methods of linguistic research (collection and analysis of linguistic data). Experience in computational or corpus linguistics is an asset.

Apart from English and Romance languages, applicants must have a good command of German or be ready to acquire this during the first six months after taking up the position.
