Meeting Description:

The focus of “Dialogue Under Occupation” is the ongoing exploration of dialogue and discourse in areas of the world experiencing occupation with an eye toward resolution.

Dialogue is presented as a complex concept, requiring 1) the participants; 2) the conditions for dialogue to commence; 3) the goal(s) of the dialogue—pre-established or arrived at through the dialogue itself. First, a minimum of two parties (i.e., individuals or groups of individuals representing a side or perspective) must be present. Second, conditions may include preconditions necessary to bring the parties together, procedures for engaging in dialogue, and a certain degree of mutual respect, without which the dialogue could not proceed and will not lead to any resolutions. Lastly, the dialogue itself must have a purpose—a common, achievable goal that participants can agree upon despite their differing perspectives. Purposeful dialogue has the potential to lead to an outcome that recognizes and respects the needs of the various participants while emerging with an agreement which all parties can abide.

Occupation, however, is a complicating factor which creates a power differential between participants: the occupied and the occupiers. If dialogue under occupation is to be successful, then, the conditions must include 1) the realization that the power differential exists; and 2) the willingness of the powerful to concede their preconceived, often hegemonic, notions of their position. It must also be understood by all parties that engaging in dialogue under occupation does not mean that the less powerful or powerless are accepting the occupation in any form, but that they are willing to confront their occupiers in an effort to be recognized as having equal human rights, including the ability to make autonomous decisions about how they should live and pursue their own definition of happiness.

The Programme of Post-Graduation in Letters (PPGL) of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) invites you to attend DUO VII – Dialogue Under Occupation –, an event that will take place 28-30 October, 2015, at the campus of PUCRS.

Updated Information:

1) The deadline for paper submission has been postponed to 15 July. The participants will be notified of the result of the evaluation until 25 July, 2015.

2) Regarding the limited number of spaces for the event, we are evaluating the summaries sent by those participants who have already made the payment of their registration. If the summary is not accepted, the candidates who do not want to participate as listeners may ask for the reimbursement of the inscription value to Educom:

3) Modalities of Presentation:

Individual Presentation – The summary of the paper should be in Times New Roman, 12, single line spacing with a margin of 2,5cm, and must contain, at the most, 300 words. The title should be centred (capital letters and in bold font), the full name and surname should be aligned to the right and followed by an email address, and the institution’s acronym in brackets. Three key words must be indicated at the end. 
The summary must contain the goal, fundamental theory, methodology and possible results. 
The summary must be sent to the site of the event along with the inscription, obeying the formatting rules.

Group Session – Instructions on sending the papers: 
The coordinator(s), with the title of Doctor, must submit the complete proposal of the session. It is also the task of the coordinator to gather all the summaries of the session’s papers in one single file. 
The proposal must contain: title of the session centralized (capital letters and bold font); name of the coordinator followed by a personal email address and the institution’s acronym aligned to the right; a general summary of the session along with individual summaries of the participants. 

The summaries of the group and individual presentations follow the same formatting rules as in 
Individual Presentation. At the moment of the individual inscription, all the participants of the Group Session (including the coordinator) must necessarily attach, in a single file, the complete proposal of the Group Session previously described.
