Dear Subscribers, Linguists, Language Lovers, and Amateur Chefs,

Our goal at the LINGUIST List is to provide valuable information and services
to our readers. One such spring of knowledge is our culinary typology - the
LINGUIST List Cookbook:

http://linguistlist.org/cookbook/

If you have a recipe for some language lasagna, Proto-Indo-European pie, or
any food for thought, we would love to include it in our Cookbook! We are
hoping to expand this year into traditional recipes written in other languages
with their translations into English. Please contribute to our endeavour by
emailing us at:

Today, we’re featuring a timely (perhaps thymely if you have fun with the
ingredients) recipe for the Garlic Language as submitted by Alicia Gómez of
the University of New Mexico:

Story behind this recipe

This comes from a friend in Dublin, Ireland, called Brian Tansey. Is Garlic
non-rhotic?

On an Irish (Gaelic) site I'm on - somebody looked for help with the Garlic
language! This is my favourite.

Ingredients

- 2 dozen Large words
- 1/2 oz butter
- 2 cloves garlic, well diced
- 2 shallots, diced
- Diced parsley
- Juice from 1/2 lemon
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. Pepper

Cooking Instructions

- Clean the words, removing any expletives, commas or full stops.
- Combine butter, shallots, garlic and parsley. Stir well.
- Add lemon juice, salt and pepper and blend briefly.
- Place the words in a shallow baking dish.
- Fill each word with a dollop of garlic butter mixture (about 1/2 or 1
teaspoon each). Bake at 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
- Serve on a page with a side serving of music.
- And a (well) Read wine.
