ALAPP 2015: Language, Discourse and Action in Professional Practice
The 5th International Conference on Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice (ALAPP) will be held at the Università degli Studi di Milano, Milan Italy, 6-8 November 2015.
The conference aims to bring together scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds, especially those related to language and communication research, and professional specialities (e.g., mediation, management, business, law, journalism, education, healthcare, social care, therapy, translation and interpreting). A special emphasis will be on the role language and discourse as tools for action in professional practice and on relevant research. ALAPP 2015 welcomes contributions on any topic linking professional practice with language and communication issues.

Conference Themes Include:
- Language, communication and the professions
- Identity construction in professional communication
- Use of lingua franca in professional encounters
- Professional practice, discourse and the new media
- Translation, interpreting and professional practice
- Linguistic training for professionals
Submission Guidelines:
Submissions are to be sent to alapp2015.conference at unimi.it by March 31, 2015.
For all submissions, indicate:
- Abstract title, author names, and institutional affiliations of the responsible (presenting) (author and collaborating authors).
- Contact e-mail address and phone number for the responsible author.
- Up to three conference themes (feel free to indicate themes beyond the list above).
Proposals will include:
1) Panels:
Panels which will include approximately four thematically related papers will be scheduled for 90 minutes.
In addition to individual proposals (250 words), please submit an overview description of no more than 300 words of the panel’s content and objectives.
2) Individual Papers:
Proposals (250 words) can be made for either oral or poster presentations. The organisers have the final decision about whether a proposal is selected for oral or poster presentation.
3) Work-in-Progress Roundtable:
Proposals should be no more than 250 words targeted at oral presentation.
Please note that ALAPP conference policy is one main oral presentation per author. Any additional accepted proposals may be presented as poster(s).
All proposals will undergo a double blind peer-review process.
Following formal acceptance, the responsible (presenting) authors must register for the conference prior to the finalisation of the conference programme.
Language of the Conference:
The organising committee is pleased to accept presentations in English and Italian.
Pre-Conference Masterclass:
Please note that there will be a pre-conference Masterclass on 5 November 2015, led by Srikant Sarangi, titled “Engaging qualitatively with institutional and professional discourse”.
