Curriculum Renewal in the Faculty of Arts: Language Teaching and Learning
The Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia is seeking a full
time postdoctoral research fellow who will be appointed as a Teaching and
Learning Fellow (TLF) to carry out research and to work on innovations in
language learning and teaching in the Faculty of Arts undergraduate programs.
The Teaching and Learning Fellow will be expected to:
- Develop an inventory of current, prospective, and in-development
technologies for mediated language learning and innovations in face-to-face
learning;
- In consultation with faculty members and departments, design three pilot
language learning modules;
- Work in consultation with Arts units to develop models and establish
criteria for language learning in the context of a professional field of
practice;
- Work with the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology to conceptualize
models for students’ involvement in fellow students’ learning; monitor
effectiveness of involvement; develop training for students;
- Lead the formation of an advisory panel to the project’s Steering
Committee/Working Group;
- Develop collaborative links with external community partners and other
internal units at UBC, and establish prospects for non-credit and
non-traditional-format language learning;
- Work with project leads to develop an evaluation plan to record
observations, to track use of the inventory; and develop student and
instructor surveys and interview guides as deemed necessary in accordance with
the evaluation plan;
- Create cloud storage systems and protocols which establish long-term
sustainability of project and ease of use for departments and units in Arts.
As a part of the Language Learning & Teaching Steering Committee, the TLF will
be a key member in developing course and program-level learning objectives,
assessments, and teaching resources; developing instructional material
including interactive activities and pretests; assisting in the evaluation of
student learning and overall project success. Publication of research related
to the impact of these interventions is also encouraged. Experience in
non-traditional methods of language acquisition is encouraged and welcomed.
Candidates should have completed their Ph.D. in Linguistics or Education, and
have experience with second language acquisition and language learning and
teaching pedagogy; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication
skills, and a strong personal commitment to improving education within the
discipline. Fluency in English is required, and a second language is
considered an asset. Experience in curriculum development, blended or online
learning, developing educational resources and activities, and using SoTL to
inform practice will be considered assets.
Applicants should provide a single PDF file (in the following order): a cover
letter addressed to Dr. Janet Giltrow, a curriculum vitae, a short statement
of interest that details how previous experience relates to the TLF position,
and the names and complete contact information (including phone and email) of
three references. Applications and queries regarding the position should be
emailed to Belle Cheung (application email address below) by 4:00pm on May 21,
2015. Only candidates short-listed for the position will be contacted.
