Abstract:

This dictionary with complete text in both English and Russian includes more than 500 names with explanations of their meaning and a pronunciation guide. It is a comprehensive scientific work with analytical material including linguistic, statistical, and sociological analysis of the scrupulously collected material. The entry for each name show the spelling in English and Cyrillic, the etymology, meaning, International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) spelling, and NY Times-BBC type of spelling.

The dictionary provides material related not only to Tatar names, but also to the language, culture, and social life of the Tatar people. Among the analyses are: rural and urban, change of name by women and by men, and popular names.
The dictionary comes with a DVD featuring a native speaker who pronounces the names.
