Meeting Description:

The 4th edition of the conference aims to bring together researchers and practitioners in the field of theoretical and applied linguistics with a view to promoting interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue and enhancing an eclectic approach to the study of language (text linguistics, intercultural communication, language acquisition, language teaching, phonology, morphology, and syntax, semantics and pragmatics of intercultural discourse, stylistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, lexicology and lexicography, translation studies, (critical) discourse analysis, current research methods in linguistics). At the same time, this conference provides an opportunity to re-enforce the dialogue on research and collaboration in academic and professional contexts. Such collaboration is fundamental to the design and implementation of effective pedagogy, assessment, and curricula.

Analysing political communication: From theory to practice
(23-24 September 2016, Brașov)

For more than 20 years, scholars in various fields of research – political sciences, history, sociology and linguistics – have devoted ample analyses to political communication: political scientists have been mainly concerned with the structure, changes and evolution of the Parliament as an institution or with drawing parallels between different parliamentary systems. Linguistic, discursive and/ or rhetorical features of parliamentary discourse have also been investigated: parliamentary deliberative argumentation, parliamentary question-response patterns or gender aspects in parliamentary debating styles.

The workshop puts forward a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach to the study of political discourse as produced by a community of practice (Laver and Wenger 1991), pursuing multiple linguistic perspectives.

Translation and Interpretation Studies: Converging worlds 
(23 September 2016, Brașov)

The dynamic nature of Translation and Interpreting Studies that we currently witness derives to a considerable extent from their interdisciplinary dimension. For a few decades now they have been intertwining with disciplines pertaining to applied linguistics (corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis and pragmatics, cognitive linguistics, etc.), but also with traditionally remote-standing ones, such as computer science. Such partnerships among disciplines oftentimes entail the engagement of a diversity of conceptual and methodological aspects in a converging manner. There are undisputable mutual benefits of interdisciplinary approaches for the disciplines in contact which are enriched with new insights and perspectives in the theoretical realm. But novel methodologies have also emerged in applied studies, opening paths for a wealth of more in-depth or new types of investigations. 

The panel is especially dedicated to interdisciplinary concerns in Translation and Interpreting Studies but welcomes papers on any topics within the theoretical and applied areas of Translation and Interpreting Studies.
