Call for Abstracts:

The language of law has a direct impact on several aspects of people’s lives by producing cultural representations. In particular, when it comes to the contemporary imaginary around gender identities, we can easily witness the expansion and penetration of the legal sphere into more and more aspects of other social – public and private – domains. Inequalities in access to resources, knowledge and rights, and social status are perpetuated, codified, and contested via the language of law. However, legal discourse seems to be bringing in challenging spaces for the transformation of legal drafting into an instrument for a non-patriarchal, or simply put, gender-neutral site of discussion and re-definition. Yet, on the other hand, several manifestations of patriarchal resistance in legal documents testify that the process of gender-neutral policies remains too broad.

This panel aims at exploring the intersections of law and gender in a variety of arenas, including labour, health, property, criminal justice, international humanitarian law, and the environment, and is an effort to address questions such as: How does law ‘regulate’ non-conforming gender representations? Is there any relationship between law and the gendering of law? What are the current strategies adopted in legal English in order to use a gender-neutral language? What is role of legal drafting in achieving gender equality?

Suggested methodological approaches include, but are not limited to, multimodality, corpus linguistics and CDA.
