Meeting Description: 

The goal of this Conference is to critically evaluate the potential of current databases and research on Chinese spoken corpora for the development of second language pedagogical applications. This year’s conference places special emphasis on the development of interlanguage learner corpora. 

Program:

Selected Major Topics:

1. Contextualized definitions of language in spoken language corpora.
2. Research-based approaches to using spoken language corpora for L2 teaching
3. Pedagogical uses of spoken language corpora (opportunities and challenges)
4. Definition and implementation of data-driven learning (DDL) within the context of corpus-based pedagogy 
5. The functional uses of various types of corpora (reference corpora, parallel corpora, learner corpora) for L2 acquisition-teaching
6. Finding the right pedagogical balance with the use of native-speaker and learner-based corpora
7. Defining and assessing the pedagogical relevance of the features of frequency and authenticity in spoken corpora.
8. Building spoken language corpora: theory, design and implementation 
9. Sharing data on spoken language corpora, building large databases 

Plenary Speakers: 

1. Xianwen Cao (Nanjing University Institute for International Students) 
Professor Cao’s research focuses on applied linguistics and Chinese as a Second Language. He has built the “Nanjing University Oral Corpus of Chinese Interlanguage.” Currently, he is working on the project “Variability in Chinese as L2 Development: A Dynamic Systems Perspective” supported by the National Social Science Foundation of the PRC.

2. Hongyin Tao (UCLA, Asian Languages and Cultures Department)
Professor Tao specializes in discourse analysis, applied linguistics, and corpus linguistics. He has developed the UCLA Corpus of Written Chinese and is co-directing the US component of the International Corpus of English. His projects on advanced spoken Chinese & academic Chinese language research/ teaching are funded by the US Department of Education.

3. Meng Yeh (Rice University, CLIC)
Professor Yeh’s current research focuses on language pedagogy and curriculum design to develop learners’ interactional competence.  Her present projects include: “Corpus-based Pedagogy: Teaching and Learning the Temporal Connective JIU” and “Developing and Assessing Interactional Competence: Beginning Level.”

4. Baoling Zhang (Beijing Language and Culture University, Faculty of Linguistic Science)
Professor Zhang specializes in applied linguistics and language policy/planning. He has worked on the project “Corpus of Chinese Interlanguage: A Global Perspective” funded by the Ministry of Education of the PRC. At present, he is in charge of a BLUC research project “Policies on Building Language Database” in various countries.

Publication of Proceedings:

The Organizers will publish the Selected Proceedings of the conference. The initial submission of the final version of the paper to be considered for publication is October 10, 2016 (two months after the end of the conference).
