Location: Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Contact Person: Warren Maguire
Meeting Email: w.maguire at ed.ac.uk

Linguistic Field(s): Anthropological Linguistics; General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics; Ling & Literature; Sociolinguistics

Subject Language(s): English (eng)

Call Deadline: 26-Oct-2015

Meeting Description:

The 7th Northern Englishes Workshop (NEW7) will be held at the University of Edinburgh on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 of April, 2016. Like previous workshops, NEW7 will focus on research on the linguistic 'North', specifically Northern England (from the English-Scottish border to as far south as you can justify), but will exclude research dealing with Scotland and Ireland (unless this concerns relations with Northern England). All aspects of the study of Northern English (dialectological, structural, historical, sociolinguistic, perceptual, etc.) are welcome. NEW7 will include a special half day workshop on the linguistic analysis of Northern English dialect literature.

Organisers:

Warren Maguire (w.maguire at ed.ac.uk)
Patrick Honeybone (patrick.honeybone at ed.ac.uk)

2nd Call for Papers:

We invite submissions for presentations on research on Northern Englishes. We currently anticipate that each presentation will have 30 minutes in total (e.g. 20 minute presentation with 10 minutes for questions/answers). In keeping with its workshop nature, both informal presentations/discussions about ongoing research bearing on any aspect of English in Northern England and conference-style research presentations are appropriate.

Please send your abstract, which should be no more than 250 words (excluding references), to Warren Maguire (w.maguire at ed.ac.uk) by 26 October 2015. It is not necessary to make your abstract anonymous. Please email us if you have any queries about any of this.
