Description:
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin offers a 3-year position for a Ph.D. candidate beginning on March 1, 2016. Payment is according to the German TV-L pay scale (TV-L 13, 65%). The position is part of the project ''A corpus-based contrastive study of tense, aspect, modality and polarity in Austronesian languages of Melanesia'' (MelaTAMP), which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The position also includes funding for conference participation and one field trip to Vanuatu.
The aim of the project is the exploration of small corpora from seven Oceanic languages spoken in Vanuatu and Papua-New Guinea and a comparative analysis of their systems of TAM and negation markers. The successful candidate will develop their PhD topic within this project and will be involved in all its aspects, including corpus research, fieldwork in Vanuatu and organization of workshops.
Requirements
Applicants should have an M.A. degree (or equivalent) in linguistics by the start date. They should have excellent command of English.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrated background in one or more of the following fields:
- Austronesian languages
- Corpus linguistics
- Semantics of TAM categories
- Typology
- Language documentation
Knowledge of German and programming skills will be considered a plus.
