Linguistic Field(s): Discourse Analysis

Call Deadline: 31-Oct-2015

Meeting Description:

Submissions are invited for the panel proposal titled ‘Discourses of European identity at times of ‘Brexit’’ organised by Franco Zappettini, Royal Holloway, University of London, to be presented at the 1st International Conference on “Europe in Discourse: Identity, Diversity, Borders”, Athens, Greece, September 23-25, 2016

The British Conservative Party has pledged to have a referendum by the end of 2017 whereby the ‘British people’ will decide on whether the UK should remain a member state of the EU (subject to
‘repatriation of powers’ from Brussels to London) or leave the Union (this latter scenario termed by the media as ‘Brexit’).

The proposed British referendum has unfolded a large debate in the European public sphere with the emergence of a number of national and transnational sites of production of discourses of Europe and European identities as well as the resemioticization of historical discourses of cultural, social, political, and economic borders between the UK and the ‘continent’. This panel intends to examine the unfolding of such discourses from a range of theoretical and methodological standpoints including –but not limited to-:

- The role of traditional and online media in discursive constructions of Europe
- Ethnographic approaches to identity construction in bottom-up voices and civic initiatives
- Identity negotiation in political and economic discourses of Europe in crisis
- Narratives analysis and changing metaphorical scenarios of Europe in discourses of migration

Call for Papers:

Colleagues are invited to submit their abstract in English (max 500 words) including the name, title, and affiliation of the contributor(s) by 31 October. Further notifications will follow on the progress of the proposal. We also envisage that accepted contributions will be part of an edited volume which will be submitted to Cambridge Scholars Publishing for publishing. Regrettably, the panel is unable to provide conference funding for contributors.
