Focus: ELBA is meant to cover work on contemporary linguistic studies in the areas of theoretical linguistics, linguistic typology, and data collection/experimental methods.

Description:
The Escuela de Lingüística de Buenos Aires (ELBA) is a school aimed to foster the training of developing researchers in the field of linguistics by offering courses delivered both by international and local instructors. Our goal is threefold. We hope to encourage new researchers, to tight the bond between local and international linguists, and also to give students the opportunity to take part in ongoing debates in the field by allowing them the chance to discuss with the specialists themselves.

In its first edition, there will be four week-long courses and a workshop. The courses will be the following:

- “Lectures on agreement”, by Hedde Zeiljstra (Georg-August Universität Göttingen)
- “Is literal language easier to understand? An introduction to non-literal language processing”, by Mercedes Marcilese (Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora).
- “Current Issues in Sign Languages Linguistics”, by Josep Quer (ICREA & Universitat Pompeu Fabra).
- “The semantics of modality, evidentiality and mirativity”, by Andrés Salanova (Université d’Ottawa).

The Workshop will take place on February 20, 2016, just a day after the end of the courses. The proposals should be sent as an attached document to elbalinguistics at gmail.com before December 15th, 2015. Abstract should be anonymous and not longer than two pages, including references and examples, with margins of at least 1-inch, 12pt Times New Roman. The name of the authors and their institutional affiliation must be included in the plain text part of the e-mail. Only one submission will be accepted per author. Participants will be informed if their presentations have been accepted by December 23. Each presentation will last twenty minutes, and it will be followed by ten additional minutes for discussion. No parallel sessions will be held. 

The official languages are Spanish, English and Portuguese, but we strongly suggest preparing handouts/slides in English.

Tuition: 400 ARS

Tuition Explanation: Admission to the courses is cost-free.

The fee for presenting in the ELBA Workshop is 400 ARS. This money will be used to cover several expenses during the school.

Registration Instructions:
Registration is open until December 15. You will find the registration form in the Registration section of the homepage of the event. A maximum of 50 students can attend each course, so do not wait too much longer to register.
