Description:
Indexing sexuality in bilingual speech
The Department of Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London invites proposals for a PhD project that examines the intersection of multilingualism and sexuality in phonetics. Projects could include, but are not limited to, investigations of whether and how multilingual individuals index their sexuality differently across languages; comparisons of particular sexuality-linked phonetic features across languages; or a study of the ways in which different features are evaluated differently in distinct linguistic contexts.
The project will be jointly supervised by Dr Esther de Leeuw and Dr Erez Levon, and so the specific project goals and methods should fall within their areas of expertise (see http://linguistics.sllf.qmul.ac.uk/people for more information). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in phonetics and/or variationist sociolinguistics, with a good MA or MSc degree. Knowledge of the relevant technical skills (e.g., phonetic analysis in Praat, multivariate statistical analysis in R or SPSS) is desirable.
Potential candidates should in the first instance send an email addressed to both Dr Esther de Leeuw [e.deleeuw at qmul.ac.uk] and Dr Erez Levon [e.levon at qmul.ac.uk] indicating their interest. Dr de Leeuw and Dr Levon will then work with promising applicants to develop a full research proposal that will subsequently be submitted for an internal funding competition at Queen Mary University of London. The funding competition is open to all applicants regardless of nationality, though funding options vary for UK nationals, EU nationals and nationals of other countries. The deadline for the internal funding competition is 31 January 2016. Interested applicants should contact Dr de Leeuw and Dr Levon well before this time (with initial contact made no later than 01 December 2015).
