Abstract:

Rana Tharu (iso thr) is a cross-border Indo-Aryan language of Indo-European language family spoken in the adjoining areas between far-western Nepal and India. The data were collected mainly from two speakers, Mr. Sugrib Rana of Pipladi VDC and Baban Rana of Dekhatbhuli VDC of Kanchanpur district of far western Nepal.

This is the first ever dictionary of the Rana Tharu language. This trilingual dictionary (Rana Tharu-Nepali-English) mainly consist of three sections. The lexical entries in the first section contain the entries in the Devanagari script, parts of speech both in English and Nepali and the meanings in both Nepali and English. The readers who are familiar with the writing system in the Devanagari script will find this alphabetical ordering practical. Moreover, the appendices include Nepali-Rana Tharu and English - Rana Tharu indices. The target audiences include the learners of the Rana Tharu language, educators and academic linguists. The introduction given in the beginning outlines how one can use this dictionary well. If this dictionary is used along with the grammatical description (Dhakal 2015b) and the analyzed texts (Dhakal 2015a), they will together help understand the language better. The dictionary can be a reference book for introducing Rana Tharu as a medium of instruction f
or the children of Rana Tharu community in basic education in general and in multilingual education in particular.
